A fan in Minnesota has launched the online petition
A fan based in St Paul, Minnesota, has created a petition calling for the local government to replace a Christopher Columbus statue with a Prince monument.
The petition reads: “We, the undersigned, do not believe that Columbus represents the values Minnesotans carry. Rather than glorify a man who wanted to extinguish Black and Native peoples, we should honor members of our community whose leadership we find inspirational.”
The online campaign calls for a replacement to be “representative of Minnesota’s Black and Native communities”. Fittingly, The Purple One was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
As of today (5 September), the petition has accrued 3,697 signatures; the goal is to reach 4,000 altogether. You can sign it here.
Last month, a petition was launched to replace a Confederate statue with a Missy Elliott monument.
