M.I.A.’s forthcoming documentary now has a release date

MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Rapper, activist and former Crack cover star M.I.A has announced the release date for her highly-anticipated documentary.

The long-awaited documentary MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A will come out on 21 September in the UK, with a US release date set for 28 September. M.I.A. also gave a first look at the film’s poster via Twitter.

The project was initially announced in 2013, however, according to Spin Magazineproduction came to a standstill following disputes between the M.I.A.’s record label and the filmmaker. Since then, M.I.A., real name Maya Arulpragasm, indicated at various points that the film may never go forward.

However, earlier this year the film had its world premier at the Sundance Film Festival, winning the World Cinema Documentary Special Award.

Directed by Stephen Loveridge, the film is promises to be an informative portrayal of M.I.A.’s life. Utilising footage from the past 20 years of her life and career to tell her story, the documentary focuses on in-depth insight into her personal life, exploring her multicultural family and controversial opinions. MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. will feature a scored by George Harrison’s son, Dhani Harrison, and Paul Hicks.
