The Twin Peaks director has recorded a 13-lesson series for MasterClass.
Entitled Creativity and Film, the film course includes modules titled The Art of Life, Educating Yourself and Breaking the Rules. Honing creative intuition is just one of the topics Lynch covers, along with staying true to your ideas, working with actors, treating your team like a happy family and sound design. A module on cinematography includes making case studies of Eraserhead and The Elephant Man – and, there’s a bonus chapter on transcendental meditation at the end.
The course comes as part of a wider series with contributions from filmmakers such as the Werner Herzog, Spike Lee and Mira Nair. Classes can be paid for online, with Lynch’s individual classes priced at £85. Access to all classes can be bought for £170 a year.
Lynch’s last release was a collaborative album called Thought Gang, which he created back in the 90s with longtime collaborator Angelo Badalementi. It resurfaced last year and landed on the Sacred Bones label in November. In 2018, he also debuted an immersive virtual reality experience of Twin Peaks at his Festival of Disruption, which was held at LA’s Ace Hotel in October.
