Nick Cave hints at Grinderman reunion and new LP

Nick Cave

The Bad Seeds frontman let slip that Grinderman may make a comeback after a nine-year hiatus.

Nick Cave has hinted that his band Grinderman, first formed in 2005, might return for a third album. In his latest Red Hand Files post, the musician writes that Grinderman’s two albums are “part of a yet to be completed trilogy, you might be happy to know.”

In the post Cave discusses the group King Crimson and guitarist Robert Fripp, who once collaborated with Grinderman on an extended version of the song Heathen Child from their sophomore album Grinderman 2. Cave states that the extended version, Super Heathen Child, is “Grinderman at their very best” and “recording with Robert Fripp remains one of the seismic events of my life.”

“I felt as though Grinderman was laying claim to their roots,” he adds. “Super Heathen Child continues to have an extraordinary hold over me, and contains within it a deep emotional pull because it is attached directly to my adolescence.”

“Listening to it, I have that strange dizzying feeling a dream has when it suddenly becomes a reality; all that deep concentrated listening I did when I was a teenager manifesting itself over 40 years later in a Fripp solo that just blows the mind.”

Cave goes on to praise his other favourite guitarists, David Gilmour and Funkadelic’s Eddie Hazel.

Grinderman were a group made up of Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn P Casey and Jim Sclavunos. After releasing two albums – Grinderman in 2007 and Grinderman 2 in 2010 – the band later disbanded in 2011. An unexpected and brief reunion took place at Coachella in 2013 and at the time, Cave wrote on Twitter, “Every other shitty band is doing it, why not someone who’s actually good.”
