The first preview of Sakamoto’s next score is here.
Last week, Ryuichi Sakamoto announced that he’s composed the score for Luca Guadagnino’s short film The Staggering Girl. Now, a teaser of the score has been released. Featuring various samples that the Japanese composer has been working on ahead of the film’s release, the preview can be listened to via the player above.
“When approaching the score for The Staggering Girl, I wanted to incorporate the tactile sound of Valentino’s fabrics,” Sakamoto told The Quietus yesterday (30 January). “So I asked them to send me some samples and utilising special sensitive microphones, I experimented ‘playing’ the fabrics. I love the sound and how it forces one’s attention to a sound all around us, yet almost entirely ignored.”
The soundtrack for The Staggering Girl is the artist’s first project since working on 2018 Black Mirror episode Smithereens. In 2016 he scored the Japanese film Rage and the year before, he took on scoring duties for The Revenant.
Sakamoto’s soundtrack to The Staggering Girl is slated for release on 14 February via Milan Records. The film, starring Julianne Moore, will make its debut the following day on MUBI.
