Mixtape Club launches with new mix from Ariel Zetina

Local Action and Finn have shared the first release of their new mixtape series.

Last week, Finn and London label Local Action unveiled their new collaborative non-profit project Mixtape Club. The dance music mixtape series was launched to support club acts and DJs across 2021 “both financially and artistically” while “clubs are closed, parties are on pause and some of our favourite DJs are out of work”.

Mixtape Club’s first season kicks off with a dynamic mix comprised of unreleased material from Chicago’s Ariel Zetina. The mix was inspired by the structure of the sestina: a fixed verse form of poetry consisting of six stanzas of six lines each.

“I’m obsessed with repetitions, motifs that come and return, repeating patterns and arpeggios,” Zetina said, “basically any time music is playing uses the mere fact that is repeating a pattern to create a mood. This mix is made up of about 50 percent unreleased tracks from me, and 50 percent tracks from my friends, most of whom live and work in Chicago and are vital to the sound that has come to define my scene.” [sic]

There will be a further five mixes dropping between February and July 2021. Mixtape Club is free to stream, and there’s the option of signing up to the club’s Patreon for £5 a month. If the pledges exceed £300 a month, the extra profit will be distributed evenly between all of the acts.
