The Rob Heppell-directed music video is premiering exclusively on Crack Magazine.
Chris Kaz is a London born and raised musician, filmmaker and Perth Records label head. Past releases such as Untold lay out his fragile take on electronic music in great detail, inviting listeners into his world through intimate lyricism and often melancholic compositions. Think diary entries reimagined in track form, or dark and introspective musings dialled in straight from the heart.
This month – today, in fact – Kaz is sharing his next record. Entitled Unlearn, Kaz has linked up with former Crack Magazine cover star Gaika on the new project, with the Basic Volume artist and manager on hand to assist with artistic direction. Unlearn is a rather topical release, given that it interweaves tales of loss, love and heartbreak in the lockdown era with themes like political injustice and systemic racism. As always, Kaz speaks from his own experiences across the record, with an additional focus on his half-Greek Cypriot and half German-Sri Lankan heritage.
Today, we’re premiering the new music video for album track Thumper. The Rob Heppell-directed visual places the viewer in an undisclosed city, with the occasional flash of bright lights or billboards visible through a trippy, chromatic sheen. Sonically, it’s a soulful and evocative track built from a genre-shrugging perspective. It also demonstrates Kaz’s capabilities as both a vocalist and a producer. Rob Heppell has previously worked on videos for the likes of Loraine James, Nazar and Dark0.
Speaking on the new video, Kaz tells Crack Magazine: “Finding yourself or creating yourself with or without love, how does this determine your way of life and how important is it to know yourself, are we guided by a singular force of worth or is it a certain cause that empowers us.”
Unlearn is out today (18 June). Stream the album here and watch the Thumper in the player above.
