Spotify launches AI-powered DJ feature

The feature is catered to each user’s music taste.

Spotify has introduced an AI DJ feature, which curates and plays personalised selections for users.

The streaming platform describes it as “a personalized AI guide that knows you and your music taste so well that it can choose what to play for you”. The feature will also be backed by AI Voice commentary, telling users information about selected tracks.

The AI voice is provided by London-based startup Sonantic AI, with input from former Spotify Executive Xavier Jernigan – who is currently the host of the platfrom’s podcast The Get Up. Spotify have also worked with OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT, on the feature, granting access to AI for music editors to deliver accurate information on songs selected by Spotify’s DJ. In January, Nick Cave wrote an open letter about a song ChatGPT had auto-generated, calling it “bullshit”.

Users have the ability to change genre themselves, with these inputs being used to tailor and further personalise the output of the DJ feature. The feature is currently in beta, with launch set to begin imminently.
