Jonny Greenwood hints at new music from The Smile

The guitarist said the band – which also includes fellow Radiohead member Thom Yorke and Sons of Kemet’s Tom Skinner – had a “big backlog of ideas”.

In a new interview with Consequence, Jonny Greenwood revealed that The Smile have plenty more material to come. Speaking on the project, Greenwood said, “the frustration of having not had access to playing in a band for a couple of years [has] just built up a big backlog of ideas.” He added, “we’re still firing off each other, and it feels productive. So, while that’s happening, we just wanna keep moving forward, I think.”

The Smile released their debut album A Light For Attracting Attention in 2022. Earlier this year, the trio confirmed that they were working on a follow-up album, revealing via their newsletter in March that they were seven weeks into recording it. Speaking on their debut album, Greenwood said, “We were doing a lot of the songs live, and we’ve made some faithful recordings of those.. I think [the record is about] the whole dynamic of three people and the limits that you have… and trying to enjoy that and work within them.”

The band debuted some of the new material at festivals last summer. The Smile are about to head out on a tour of North America over this month and next.

In Radiohead-related news, back in March the band’s drummer Philip Selway shared that a Radiohead reunion will hopefully happen within “the next couple of years”.
