Shygirl, J Hus and Jockstrap shortlisted for Mercury Prize 2023

The nominees for the annual music award have just been announced.

The shortlist for the Mercury Prize 2023 has been revealed. This year the 12 shortlisted artists for the Mercury Prize include Shygirl for her debut album Nymph and former Crack Magazine cover star J Hus for Beautiful And Brutal Yard. Elsewhere, the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Ezra Collective, RAYE and Young Fathers have been announced. Both Jockstrap and Olivia Dean are also up for the prize with their respective debut LPs.

Much like previous years, the judging panel is made up of figures from the music industry including past Mercury Prize nominees Anna Calvi as well as Jamz Supernova, Mistajam, Hannah Peel and Jeff Smith – the head of music at BBC 6 Music and Radio 2, who also chairs the panel this year.

The 2023 awards ceremony will be held on 7 September at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith with live performances from the shortlisted artists. See the full list of nominees and the albums for which they were nominated below.
