On her fourth album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, north London rapper Little Simz makes music not just for the mind and soul, but the body too. It’s a record of two kinetic halves: slick jazz, funk, soul and R&B influences up front running into a sprawl of experimental sounds, incorporating more genres than there is word count to name. The unifying factor is the ceaseless physical movement the tracks inspire.

The loose storyline is strung together with the help of spoken interludes – delivered in the tone of a detached AI life coach by ascendent actor Emma Corrin – that hint at a grand, theatrical vision behind this project; where second album Stillness in Wonderland was accompanied by an art exhibition, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is a stage show waiting to happen.

Little Simz is a world builder when she writes songs, deconstructing our current reality or delving into existing concepts and presenting them through a new prism of understanding. The landscape of Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, however, appears to have been built out from within Simz herself, exploring the bigger picture by putting her feelings under a microscope. In excavating her own depths, she has reached incredible new heights.
