Handcrafted knives, or shanks, from prisons have been obtained – some recreated from the originals – by one anonymous Instagram user, only later to be lovingly curated into a feed of sculptural pieces. Yes, they were probably used to hurt someone, but that’s not the point. The fascination lies in the inventive DIY methods employed by inmates to make handcrafted shanks – from gold-plated toothbrushes to blade-tipped HB pencils.
