JPEGMAFIA is ending 2019 on top

There’s little doubt that JPEGMAFIA is one of the year’s breakout stars.

Having promised nothing but disappointment ahead of his latest album All My Heroes Are Cornballs, Peggy, as he’s known to his fans, shocked the world by delivering what may be his best record yet. Since then he’s gone on to demolish stages at festivals, collaborate with the likes of Vegyn and generally mark himself out as the new king of post-internet, industrial rap. We met him in London for a catch-up.

Describe your sound in one sentence.

My sound in one sentence I think would be just one word: formless. No restrictions or rules.

Who are your artistic icons outside of music?

Hideo Kojima.

Full Look: ABAGA VELLI

What’s your biggest passion outside of music?

That’s hard to say. I think maybe politics but that’s a very distant second. But I’ve never really thought about it, I don’t have any other interest that deep I guess haha.

What do the next six months have in store for you?

I’m not sure. I know I want to find new ways to present myself, my music, everything. I want to improve myself I don’t exactly know what that means right now but the next six months will be used to detox from my rigorous touring.

You’ve built a very dedicated fanbase online – what’s your favourite DM you’ve ever received from a fan?

Somebody DM’d me and said: “I want you to sit on my big fat dick daddy… whoops I meant wats up love your music.”

Your live shows are very physically intense, what’s the worst injury you’ve ever sustained on stage?

A deep gash on my leg from Australia that doesn’t feel good.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen in the pit at one of your shows?

An old ass man one time.
