Listen to African Head Charge’s playlist of tracks for respect and unity
Welcome back to Selections, a series of artist-curated playlists from those in the know.
Over four decades ago in 1981, African Head Charge released their debut album My Life in a Hole in the Ground. Blending emerging electronic music technology and recording processes with traditional percussion and oddball sounds, their music was, and remains, groundbreaking. A loose ensemble centred around UK dub legend Adrian Sherwood and percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, the group has since released dozens of psychedelic records that draw from and unite sounds from across the African diaspora, with their output directly informing the dub techno and tribal techno genres.
In 2023, the group released A Trip To Bolgatanga on Sherwood’s long-running On-U label, their first full-length album in 12 years. And since, the group have also been playing a select handful of live shows, diving into their deep discography. To celebrate their return, we invited Bonjo to pick out a playlist of tracks based around respect, love and peace that he’d play on the radio right now. Dive in below.
African Head Charge play Gaswerk Music Days, which takes place in Berlin between 12 July and 14 July.
