Nextones returned to northern Italy’s former Gneiss Quarry this July with a stacked line-up featuring Robert Hood, Cashu and more.

Deep in northern Italy’s picturesque Ossola Valley, an abandoned quarry is transformed into a dramatic backdrop for light and sound for one weekend a year. After coming across the former Gneiss Quarry in 2020, the Tones on the Stones collective began transforming its picturesque site into a huge natural amphitheatre, and Nextones was born.

Nextones Festival 2024, which took place between 18-21 July, was an audiovisual feast. Vertical walls formed blank canvases for psychedelic light shows, while stone-shaking techno, electro, experimental and much more reverberated around its Theatre Stage.

Across the weekend, some of electronic music’s brightest talents performed, with Friday seeing Lanark Artefax bring his singular brand of dark, swirling atmospherics to the stage, alongside a live performance from Swiss-Nepalese singer Aïsha Devi. Saturday took on a more four-to-the-floor flavour, with techno legend Robert Hood taking to the decks alongside Marie Davidson, Roman artists DJ Taxxi and Cosimo Damiano, and São Paulo LGBTQ+ underground hero Cashu.
