Listen to a playlist curated by multidisciplinary artist GAUNT
Welcome back to Selections, a series of artist-curated playlists from those in the know.
Blurring the lines between virtual and physical, multidisciplinary artist Jack Warne, a.k.a. GAUNT, is set to bring his audiovisual performance Augmenting the Void – ULCY to London’s Southbank Centre this October.
The performance comes as part of Southbank Centre’s new audio project, Concrete Voids – a bespoke, large-scale experimental audio project designed by Southbank Centre Sound Technician Tony Birch. The system consists of over 80 speakers concealed within the chambers, tunnels and vents surrounding the Queen Elizabeth Hall auditorium, turning the entire space into a 3D instrument.
Concrete Voids provides artists with unprecedented spatial audio capabilities, using TiMax panLab to allow for real-time movement and manipulation of sound within the venue. This creates a rich, immersive experience that transforms how sound is perceived in a live setting – and even allows artists to interact with the sound dynamically as they perform.
Central to Augmenting the Void – ULCY are four large-scale paintings by Warne, each concealing looping memory sequences beneath their surface. These loops are activated and revealed during the performance through a custom-built Augmented Reality system, developed in collaboration with artist Alistair McClymont.
Staying true to his output, GAUNT’s selections playlist – themed ‘wave function collapse’ – is eclectic and brooding, offering an insight into the artist’s inspirations, from Harold Budd and Aphex Twin to smugsbunny.

GAUNT will showcase Augmenting the Void – ULCY on 3 October at London’s Southbank Centre
