Italian Dance Wave – Mixed by Franz Scala

As the boss of Berlin-based imprint Slow Motion, Franz Scala devotes a lot of time to discovering and spotlighting alluring dancefloor sounds from Italian producers. His knowledge of Italo, disco, new wave and acid made in 1980s Italy runs so deep that it formed the basis of his label – compiling lesser known tracks from bygone years and showcasing contemporary producers who create in the same vein as the forefathers.

For this specialist mix, Scala has put together an intoxicating cocktail of the genre he calls Italian Dance Wave. From smoky Italo through to more functional sounds, the almost two hour-long mix serves as a primary source for largely unheard tracks from this arena. Speaking about the goal for the mix over email, Scala said, “The main point is to link together Italian artists from the last decade into a kind of genre – inspired by timeless music that is still active.” Reflecting on the label’s goals of unearthing and promoting these strands, Scala isn’t done. “I have still so much to offer and discover.”
