Selections: Veronica Vasicka

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

It’s no understatement to say that producer, label boss and photographer Veronica Vasicka really spearheaded the resurgence in cold wave, minimal wave and industrial in recent years. The New York native first became known as a tastemaker thanks to her weekly show that ran on East Village Radio from 2003 to 2014. Vasicka’s intuition for unearthing long-forgotten records – and the DIY scenes that birthed them – was consolidated with her own imprint Minimal Wave Records. Here, Vasicka gave full rein to her digger’s instinct, shining light on the dimmest, most intriguing corners of DIY tape culture. Likewise, its subsidiary Cititrax may have a focus on new music, releasing the likes of Marie Davidson, Broken English Club and Silent Servant, but that tendency to skew to the raw and the analogue remains marked.

This exclusive playlist is composed of precisely those sounds. A mix of heavy industrial, scorching electro and EBM drawn from both the 80s and more recently. Essential stuff.

Veronica Vasicka plays at Berlin Atonal, Germany, 22-26 August
