Selections: Héctor Oaks

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

For our latest entry, we welcome a playlist selected by one of the brightest stars in techno. Born in Madrid but now settled in Berlin, Héctor Oaks is resident at Bassiani in Tbilisi, arguably Europe’s most hyped club, as well as Herrensauna, arguably the most hyped night in Berlin outside of the Berghain. A man with his finger on the pulse, sure, but Oaks’ position at the bleeding edge among the likes of SPFDJ and the Fast Forward crew from Copenhagen stems from a long time spent digging and honing his craft. Not to mention the impressive release rate of his label OAKS.

His sets famously look backwards for direction, so it’s somewhat surprising to find that most of the tracks selected here are recent. Other modern darlings like DJ Normal 4 and VTSS are present, and he gives nods to artists he has released on his other label, KAOS, in Hadone and Schacke (one of the aforementioned Fast Forward collective). The tracks are hard and fast, and “conceptualised for those sweaty nights in foggy basements or low-lighted open airs,” according to Oaks. “Groovy and funk, murky and punk.”
