Speakers Corner Quartet curate a playlist from their extended family of friends and collaborators
Welcome back to Selections, a series of artist-curated playlists from those in the know.
Having been a cornerstone of South London’s music scene for nearly two decades, Speaker’s Corner Quartet have built a wide-ranging family of collaborators and colleagues. Consisting of Kwake Bass, Peter Bennie, Biscuit and Raven Bush, the group first came together as the house band for the Speaker’s Corner night at Brixton Jamm, where they provided the soundtrack for local MC’s to show off their lyrical chops.
Last year, they released their debut album Further Out Than the Edge via OTIH Records – a rich, 13-track LP with a substantial cast of features, including the likes of Sampha, Coby Sey, Lafawndah, Mica Levi, LEILAH, James Massiah, Tirzah, Confucius MC and Joe Armon-Jones. Their track Geronimo Blues, featuring Kae Tempest on vocal duties, won Best Contemporary Song at the 2024 Ivor Novello Awards last week.
To celebrate, the foursome have curated a playlist for us, filled with tracks recorded by their their friends and contemporaries that directly influence them – songs that Speakers Corner Quartet have played live, remixed, featured on or produced. Dive in below.
Speakers Corner Quartet play Meltdown Festival, which takes place at London’s Southbank Centre between June 14 and June 23.
