The 35-track record has supposedly been in the works since 2015.

A Grimes nightcore album may well be on its way. The former Crack Magazine cover star – who is due to release her Miss Anthropocene follow-up, Book 1, sometime this year – took to social media over the weekend (8 January) to tease another new record devoted entirely to nightcore.

“After my albums out I have like a 35-track nightcore album I’ve been making since 2015 that I think rly needs to come out,” wrote Grimes. “I don’t think it makes a ton of sense but it’s getting so absurdly long lol.” [sic]

Grimes has dabbled in the genre in the past, namely on a 2019 remix of track We Appreciate Power. The following year, the artist revealed that she had a nightcore album in the works during an interview with Resident Advisor.

Her posts promoted responses from fans and fellow artists alike. Danny L Harle, for instance, tweeted “will my heart survive”, while Princess Nokia wrote “I know this pretty rave girl” in an Instagram reply.

It’s unlikely that Grimes will announce the release of her nightcore project anytime soon – given that she’s yet to confirm a release date for Book 1

Grimes has previously described Book 1 as a “space opera” about a lesbian AI romance, hinted at a potential collaboration with Eartheater and teased a smattering of songs such as 100% Tragedy, Shinigami Eyes and Love via social media. The latter track was a response to “all the privacy invasion, bad press, online hate and harassment by paparazzis” Grimes experienced following her breakup with Elon Musk. The album will be Grimes’ first for her new label Columbia Records, following a move from 4AD.

In November, Grimes announced that she’d formed an AI girl group called NPC. The artist premiered the project through a new collaborative single with DJ and producer Chris Lake entitled A Drug From God. The following month she released a song called Player of Games
