For SS15 Dr. Martens looked to US Hardcore scene of the early 80s.
The US Hardcore scene mixed the utilitarian edges of punk with a few eyelets of surfer imagery, as well as loud, cartoonish graphics and underground fanzines. Some of the key seasonal prints within the new collection were inspired by the tattoos that donned the arms of many of the bands integral to the US Hardcore scene.
These tattoos were heavily influenced by the Japanese art of Irezumi which was usually applied to the flesh of the Yakuza, Japan’s feared secret society of gangsters. These legendary tattoo artists spent years creating living masterpieces.
The new Dr. Martens print uses antiques and a skin-coloured base to display a number of traditional Japanese-style tattoos. Peacocks, koi carp and flowers as well as cherry blossom wrap all around the uppers, with a sacred cherry red 1460 hidden away in the complex patterning.
We’re happy to announce that in conjunction with Dr. Martens we’re giving away £250 to spend in any of their stores. All you have to do is answhere this question:
Which Japanese art form inspired Dr. Martens SS15 prints?
