Emerging from the creative breeding ground of the legendary Brixton Windmill, Goat Girl burst into kaleidoscopic definition with their self-titled debut in 2018.

While On All Fours continues with the London four-piece’s particular vein of worldly conscious lyricism, their sophomore album also offers greater introspection and vulnerability. Centering a more collaborative songwriting process, On All Fours takes the DIY spirit of Goat Girl’s psych-tinged post-punk and channels this into a more expansive, electronic-driven sound. To mark the release of their new record, we caught up with Goat Girl to talk time travel, crisps and sex clubs.

Who is the best cook and what is their signature dish?
Lottie: Ellie – dahl, okra curry, also bibimbap.

Any regrettable haircuts?
Lottie: I have a very regrettable hair experience. We got free hair dyeing from Bleach… I knew I didn’t really want to dye my hair, ‘cause I’m just very basic with my style, it’s not that out there. I felt kind of peer pressured. Everyone else was getting crazy colours, I thought I couldn’t be the only one not to. So I got this bright blue underbit of my hair and it was fucking horrible.

Holly: I had an inverted bob in school which was the worst thing ever.

What really winds you up?
Ellie: The price of renting in London.

Any annoying habits?
Holly: I snore.

Ellie: I chew the inside of my mouth.

Lottie: Quite a farter. I pride myself in them but I don’t think other people do.

Favourite TikTok account?
Lottie: We’re not very good with those things. But all these accounts of people reposting themselves lip syncing to Life Without Buildings.

Best pop star of all time?
Lottie: Gwen Stefani.

Ellie: Beyoncé.

Holly: Kylie.

Most famous person you’ve ever met?
Lottie: Will Young and his grandma.

Holly: Gareth Gates. Bobby Gillespie took me out for lunch once in Texas.

Ellie: Didn’t you guys meet the mixologist Merlin from First Dates at a petrol station?

If you could invite anyone to join Goat Girl, who would it be?
Lottie: Little Dragon, Deerhoof.

Ellie: Solange.

Holly: Kazu from Blonde Redhead.

What’s the worst hotel you’ve stayed in?
Lottie: This one in Newark. It was our first time in America and someone booked us in the roughest part of town. We turned up with all of our gear and got the weirdest looks. Someone stole Rosy’s snare within ten minutes of us just being there stood with all of our stuff. There was bulletproof glass in the reception. The whole experience was quite freaky.

Can you tell us a secret?
Lottie: No, then it wouldn’t be a secret.

What’s the weirdest party you’ve ever been to?
Lottie: Me and Rosy went to this sex club in Berlin and the experience was kind of weird… We went to this place our friend had told us about that he’d gone into by accident and had quite a good night. We went there really sober, the drinks were like ten euros, so we just sat in the corner watching people fuck.

What’s the biggest realisation you’ve had in the past year?
Ellie: We’re all gonna die.

Holly: Taking things for granted pre-Covid, seeing friends, the sociable element of life.

If you could time travel where would you go?
Ellie: The 70s and be a part of that whole funk and psychedelic scene with Sly and the Family Stone. I’d want to go to Soul Train.

Lottie: The Middle Ages, just ‘cause it’s so fucking gross. I can imagine orgies happening all the time, witches flying around…

Top book recommendation?
Lottie: Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower.

Holly: Sayaka Murata’s Earthlings, Bernadine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other.

Ellie: Kelly A. Turner’s Radical Remission, Mira Manek’s Prajna.

Favourite track to dance to?
Ellie: Lady Ray’s Tonight You Might.

Holly: Otzeki’s Sweet Sunshine.

Lottie: Plus 2’s Melody

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Lottie: Don’t worry about not knowing what you want from life, or what it is you’re trying to do. It doesn’t really come with age, you never really fully know.

Best crisp flavour?
Lottie: Pickled onion Monster Munch.

Holly: Flaming hot Monster Munch.

Ellie: Doritos chilli heatwave… Twiglets!

Favourite venue?
Lottie: Hard to choose, there are so many good ones: The Windmill, Broadcast and Nice ‘n Sleazy in Glasgow, Sister Midnight Records, The Brudenell, Norwich Arts Club, The Hare and Hound in Birmingham.

What instantly cheers you up?
Lottie: RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Ellie: My little sisters.

Holly: My dog, Peggy.

If there was a Goat Girl movie, who would direct it?
Ellie: Edgar Wright.
