Marie Davidson and PUP shortlisted for 2019 Polaris Prize

The Polaris Music Prize has revealed the shortlist of candidates for best Canadian album of the year.

Marie Davidson and Toronto band PUP are among the artists shortlisted for the 2019 Polaris Prize. The annual prize is awarded to the best Canadian album of the year, and the winner will be revealed at the Polaris Gala on 16 September. Marie Davidson’s Working Class Womanreleased by Ninja Tune in 2018 – and PUP’s Morbid Stuff are both included on the short-list, as well as Jessie Reyez’s Being Human in Public and Haviah Mighty’s 13th Floor. Find the full shortlist below.

A long-list of artists who didn’t make the short-list includes, Carly Rae Jepsen, Dilly Dally, Fucked Up, Yves Jarvis and Sandro Perri.

The Polaris Music Prize is a not-for-profit organisation that honours artists “who produce music albums of distinction”. A panel of judges made up of Canadian journalists and music industry figures pledges to award the prize “without regard to musical genre or commercial popularity”. Previous winners have included Arcade Fire, Kayranada, Fiest, Caribou and Tanya Tagaq.
