The festival’s flagship event returns to Kraków in October.
The music programme for Unsound 2023 has today (24 August) expanded. The likes of Mun Sing, one half of Giant Swan, claire rousay, Lanark Artefax, Aunty Rayzor and Ben Frost have been announced. Frost will premiere his first new music since 2017 at the Polish event as part of a live link-up with Car Bomb’s Greg Kubacki and audiovisual artist – and former Thom Yorke collaborator – Tarik Barri.
Elsewhere, artists such as JASSS and Emma dj, and estoc and Oldyungman, have been confirmed for back-to-back sets. Festival-goers can also see the debut of Gabber Modus Operandi’s Kasimyn’s latest project under his solo Hulubalang alias, Bunyi-Bunyi Tumbal.
These new additions, among others, will join previously announced acts including Autechre, DJ Babatr, Toumba, Tirzah, SHERELLE, VTSS, Rosa Pistola and Nick León in Kraków. To accompany the artist announcement, the festival has also shared the performance schedule for the upcoming event, which will also include a discourse programme. Przemysław Witkowski and Lyra Pramuk are among the newest names added to that one, alongside Kat Zavada and Dazed‘s Günseli Yalcinkaya who have been tapped for AI-driven workshops.
The Unsound theme for 2023 is “Dada” with an AI Artistic Director (AIAD) included as a member of this year’s curatorial team. “More than a century after its birth, we’re interested in Dada as a force guiding the festival” – reads a message from Mat Schulz, Unsound Artistic Director and co-founder, on the festival’s website. “This is not really about looking, or listening, backwards to the past for clues. We want to think about Dada in the present, and with an ear to the future, in which non-human agency is increasingly prevalent. AIAD is part of this – an absurdist provocation, rather than a techno-utopian statement.”
Unsound 2023 takes place from 1-8 October. Head to the festival’s website for further information, and tune into a claire rousay Sunday Mix below.
