The Portuguese festival returned to Viana do Castelo for its 17th edition this August, with a programme focused on techno, new electronic names and immersive visual experiences.
Returning once more to the picturesque backdrop of Viana do Castelo, this year Neopop brought three days of dance music to the historic Forte de Santiago da Barra from 8-10 August.
The festival sharpened its focus on sensory experiences for 2024, both through audiovisual light displays and a series of interactive installations including a standout immersive experience, Play 2 Rave. With digital art and video game quests running themes of the festival, the atmosphere felt akin to entering an open-world game portal, each stage a new level for the curious to traverse.
With an emphasis on house and techno, Neopop’s 2024 programme hosted both new and established names across two stages into the early hours. Predictable highlights included techno stars Jeff Mills and Hector Oaks, sets from IMOGEN and Jennifer Loveless, and a number of b2b link-ups including Interstellar Funk and Priori — a show that felt like watching two final bosses face off in a symphonic showdown, the audience willing sacrifices to the auditory crossfires. But it was on the final day that Neopop’s apotheosis was reached, with Palestinian DJ Sama’ Abdulhadi bringing her signature techno world-builders to the arena before a concluding audiovisual show from FJAAK.
