Selections: Snapped Ankles

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

For their shows, London post-punks Snapped Ankles play DIY instruments and, most strikingly, have a tendency to dress as ‘woodwoses’ – mythical wild men, if you’re not clued up on medieval mythology. In other words, they make an effort. It’s certainly made people sit up; their album Come Play the Trees, released on The Leaf label in 2017, was described as “an aural onslaught played out on homemade log synths, electrified guitars and sticks beating hell on taut animal skin”.

Stepping up for Crack Magazine’s latest instalment of Selections, the band have recreated an old cassette the group found in the back of a cupboard marked C90-Random SSSShuffles. “The only cassette tape player we have left is in the car so when we put this on driving to gigs,” they explained. “We imagine we have iTunes shuffle playing party roulette and have a good singalong with Cybotron, Jeffrey Lewis and Giorgio Moroder.” Getting ready for a gig? Need a playlist for the road? Choosing your finest woodwose outfit? You know what to do.

Snapped Ankles play at Bluedot Festival, Cheshire, 19-22 July
