Selections: Iceage

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

Iceage have been flying the flag for post-punk in Copenhagen for over a decade now. Continually pushing the limits of their sound, the band’s latest album saw them enlist Sky Ferreira for the horn-heavy Painkiller and embrace the influence of Motown, all while enlisting the help of classical musicians for a sense of extra grandeur. The result was a chaotic, lurching record that fans and critics alike lapped up, cementing the band’s already cult status.

Since then they’ve been on the road almost non-stop, unleashing a maelstrom of moody punk and hardcore on every stage they set foot on. On Saturday 3 August they’ll bring that same energy to Visions Festival alongside the likes of Demdike Stare, Steam Down, Scalping and Anna Meredith. Ahead of their performance at Visions, Iceage have put together a playlist that’s essentially the opposite of their live shows; packed with soul, reggae and all manner of laidback material.

Featuring such classics as One Spliff A Day and DJ Spanish Fly’s Cement Shoes, it’s the perfect salve to a life of hectic punk shows, imbued with the same unknowable irony that lead singer Elias Bender Rønnenfelt has become known for in interviews.

Iceage play Visions Festival on 3 August.
