Welcome back to our monthly roundup of the best mixes to have hit the internet over the past month.

Another lunar lap, another vast cache of recorded mixes. Over the past calendar month, there’s been a crop of standout sets. Future festival headliners Dust-e-1, Mesmé and Oli XL have all shared sonic treats. We’ve had tales of love in the club from Local Action’s Sim Hutchins and his fans. And if you’ve been looking at flights to escape the crushing gloom of winter, perhaps consider transporting yourself to warmer climes via a mix by Florentino.

Here are 10 fantastic mixes to suit whatever mood you’re feeling.

01

Dust-e-1

Melbourne Deepcast 232

One of our favourite artists to come out of Canada over the last few years, Dust-e-1 is as comfortable turning out celestial sci-fi chuggers as he is delivering warp-speed jungle floor-whackers. Melbourne Deepcast managed to record a recent live show of his from MUTEK festival in Montreal, and it’s a perfect introduction to the British up-and-comer’s eclectic talents. Here, he draws for smooth, bouncy acid and house after floating through an ambient intro. Be sure to check some of his other collaborative projects too, like the band Perishing Thirst and ANF.

02

Powder at CockTail d'Amore

Rinse FM (04/10/19)

At this point, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t agree that Powder is one of the best in the business. Playing with a sense of purpose that comes from an assuredness of style and concept many DJs only wish for, her mixes are masterful exercises in the push and pull that the best sets achieve. Percussive, tough, but funky and swung, this is techno of the highest order.

03

Oli XL

NTS

With the release of Rogue Intruder, Soul Enhancer, Oli XL released what will top many critic’s lists of electronic full-lengths come the year’s end, striking a sweet spot between being warm, intricate and forward-thinking. Over in the NTS booth, the Swedish artist delivers a satisfyingly dark moodiness while flirting with some R&B. Another piece of work that demands your attention from one of the year’s undoubted winners.

04

Anna Meredith

Dazed Digital

The Scottish composer Anna Meredith turns out a short and sweet trip based loosely on the idea of confessions. What’s particularly admirable is Meredith’s lack of concern for the usual trappings of DJ mixes, switching up the feel with an abruptness that many lack the bravery to emulate.

05

Big Dope P

Hyponik

Despite their home being split between London and Paris, Moveltraxx are one of the finest purveyors of US club tracks on either side of the Atlantic. The label, founded by Big Dope P, was the first to release DJ Rashad in Europe and has a long-running association with Teklife. Recording for Hyponik, Big Dope P demonstrates some of the label’s loves with an energetic race through footwork, Jersey club and ghetto house.

06

Seven Hills Records

puxmix 2

The curators who run Seven Hills Records are trusted tastemakers, having pushed razor-sharp acid via the Zeitnot sublabel, turned their hand to obscure reissues from forgotten 90s labels, and platformed the hotly-tipped Adam Pits. The crew demonstrate their DJ chops here with a slow-burning set of whip-smart club tunes. Ones to keep a close eye on.

07

Florentino

Mixmag In Session

Reggaeton bangs – there’s no other way of putting it. Florentino, who avidly digs through dembow, soca and dancehall from his familial home of Columbia, is one of this country’s (especially in Manchester) most successful ambassadors of the sound. Packed with personal edits, this mix hurtles through his favoured shoulder-shifting rhythms.

08

Mesmé

Into the Woods Mix 001

At nearly three years old, Into the Woods is without a doubt one of LA’s most consistent parties, assembling discerning line-ups on an almost weekly basis. Now firmly established, they’ve launched a new mix series with resident Mesmé. Atmospheric techno, breaks and punchy electro are seamlessly mixed to great effect here.

09

wgwn & Sim Hutchins

Rave Litany on Threads Radio

Rave Litany honcho wgwn invites Sim Hutchins on to his Threads show to join him in his cacophonous delivery of serrated club sounds. Hutchins recently launched the Club Love project, in which tales of affection at the rave, as told by anonymous callers, are mingled in with his viscous, shredded bangers. Some of the best of these stories have made it into the mix too.

10

Horror(s)core – Mixed by clipping.

Crack Magazine

Alright, this is one of ours, but you really need to hear this Halloween special from clipping. Hip-hop’s got a long history of toeing the line between humour and genuine disgust and depravity, something clipping. clearly appreciate as evidenced on their album There Existed an Addiction to Blood. This mix exists at the intersection of those moods and tones – and it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. This one’s for the fiends who believe that Halloween should be celebrated all year round. Plug in, if you dare.
