A true institution in the European festival scene, Sónar returned to Barcelona this month for a three-day showcase exploring the intersection of music, art and technology.

Taking place between 13-15 June at Barcelona’s Fira Montjuïc and Fira Gran Via, this year’s edition of the festival welcomed first-class acts from around the world including Kaytranada, Charlotte de Witte, VTSS, Vince Staples and more.

Divided into three parts: Sónar by Day, Sónar by Night and Sónar+D, the festival delivered an extensive range of live music and DJ sets. Spanning dozens of different genres, the line-up was tied together by a focus on experimental sounds and audiovisual displays, with names including Shyboi, Surusinghe, DJ Gigola, horsegiirL, Blackhaine and Loraine James.

Alongside the music, the programme included workshops, exhibitions, talks and forums, with themes exploring the frontiers of technology in the arts and AI’s impact on the creative industries.

Across the weekend, photographer Manuel Cardozo captured candid shots of a handful of artists playing, from Marie Davidson and Iceboy Violet to Surusinghe and Tommy Cash. Catch up on the backstage moments below.
