Welcome back to Selections, a series of artist-curated playlists from those in the know.

With the bop of a bucket hat, a shuffle of the shoulders and an invariably massive 4×4 kick underscoring soulful vocals and funky basslines, a Mr. G live set is one of dance music’s most instantly recognisable, and fun, experiences. He’s also one of UK clubland’s most important artists, having been involved in soundsystem culture since the 80s, before becoming one of the earliest proponents of house and techno music in the 90s as part of the KCC DJ trio and half of techno duo The Advent.

Since then, he’s been focusing on the Mr. G sound, releasing countless classics via his own Phoenix G label, as well as Defected, REKIDS, Bass Culture and more. Yet on top of his own productions, he’s also a committed crate digger and lover of records, old and new. His Instagram page looks like it could belong to a second hand vinyl seller’s, with his feed sharing hundreds of new digs and wax from his archive.

With that in mind, we asked him to curate a Selections playlist featuring artists he’s backing right now. “The list are folk I love and respect,” he says, “who contribute and are continually making good music. Gotta support that.”

Listen to the playlist and read our Q&A with him below.

How do you usually discover new music?
Digging records, shopping, following interesting folk in the right scene. [My wife] Cath and I meet folk along the roads I travel. Or by any means necessary.

Can you tell us about one of the artists in your playlist we might not know?
Boy Harsher. I was seeing who else played at The Knockdown Center NYC, as I’ve played a few times. I saw a clip I loved [of them playing] and [have] hunted their music down ever since. Raw and very authentic 80s feel, which I love.

What UK artists are you enjoying at the moment?
J:Kenzo and Alix Perez. Straight up deep, dark, dutty and twisted.

What about overseas?
Purelink. They did a remix recently [that’s] so good and trippy. Next level tings, music for the mind.

What are you enjoying outside of electronic at the moment?
This twisted and deep album Ghosts by Hania Rani. What a concept, voice and album. Just hits something deep, that choral electronic world.

Who’s putting on nights worth going to?
[Alix Perez’s] 1985 Music at The Roundhouse Camden this year, one of the best gigs ever for me. So on point, unified.

What can we expect from your live show at FLY?
One of the best festivals. Great location, production, epic sound and that Scottish warmth like no other. Expect us to have fun.

Mr. G plays FLY Open Air, which takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland on 21 & 22 September.
